John Webster PhD is Professor Emeritus at the University of Bristol and Former Head of the Bristol Vet School. He has been involved in the science and promotion of animal welfare for over 30 years.
On arrival at Bristol in 1977 he established a unit for the study of animal behaviour and welfare, which now is over 50 strong. He was a founding member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council and first propounded the ‘Five Freedoms’ which have gained international recognition as standard defining elements of good welfare in domestic animals.
He is a former President of both the Nutrition Society and the British Society for Animal Science. His book Animal Welfare: A Cool Eye towards Eden was published in 1994 and is still in print. Its successor, Animal Welfare: Limping towards Eden was published in 2005.
John has been a member of Voiceless’ Scientific Animal Welfare Advisory Committee since 2009.
