Shaun Gladwell is among Australia’s most celebrated younger artists. His videos of skateboarders, cyclists and motorbike riders performing in a range of urban and outback environments invite speculation on broader issues of art history and contemporary culture.
Shaun Gladwell was born in Sydney in 1972 and studied at the Sydney College of the Arts, College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales and Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has undertaken numerous international residencies and commissions.
Gladwell has held solo exhibitions at the Australian Pavilion; 53rd Venice Biennale, Italy; Spacex, UK; Artspace, Sydney; Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Perth; Sherman Galleries, Sydney; Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne; University Art Gallery, University of California, San Diego; Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre, Buffalo, NY; and Cité Internationaledes Arts, Paris.
His most recent group exhibitions include representation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome; Contemporary Art Centre Vilnius, Lithuania; the Biennale of Sydney and Taipei Biennale (2008); Venice Biennale (2007); Yokohama Triennale (2005); and Biennales in Busan and São Paulo (2006). Major group exhibitions in Tokyo, Bangkok, Rome and Oslo followed a residency at Tokyo Wonder Site in Shibuya, Japan (2006–07).
Shaun Gladwell’s work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia; Art Gallery of New South Wales; Museum of Contemporary Art; Campbelltown Arts Centre; Macquarie Bank; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; University of Sydney; Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, NZ; University of Queensland, Brisbane; and in various corporate and private collections in Australia, Asia, the United Kingdom and United States.
Artspace, Sydney published Shaun Gladwell’s monograph in 2007. Another monograph, "MADDESTMAXIMVS", was published by Schwartz City in 2009.
