Life without live export a possibility; WSPA report |

The recent release of the ACIL Tasman report on Australian Live Sheep Exports has caused a considerable stir within the live export industry. The Report, which was commissioned by WSPA, assessed the economic viability and policy framework of the Western Australian live export trade. The findings emphasised the possibility of phasing out live sheep exports without incurring detrimental economic impacts. It also proposed prudent strategies for Australia’s withdrawal from participation in the live export market.

Kangaroos slaughtered for the sake of a car race |

140 Eastern Grey kangaroos were shot earlier this month ahead of the V8 Supercar race in Bathurst.
The kangaroos were slaughtered to keep them away from the car rally amid fears of kangaroos hopping onto the race track, as happened with a lone roo in 2007.

Orphaned joeys refused a second chance at life |

A recent decision by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal to refuse an application by local animal welfare group, Wildcare Queanbeyan Incorporated, to export joeys to its NSW sanctuary will have devastating consequences for local wildlife. The Territory’s firmly established policy requires that all orphaned joeys, whether injured or otherwise, must be destroyed. Current laws permit joeys to be killed by a forceful blow to the skull or by stunning and decapitation. |
