"If the poultry industry truly cares about the public's right to know how chickens are treated from factory to plate, then consumers deserve nothing less than the honest truth." Brian Sherman AM, 28 July 2011, read more

"A staggering number of sentient beings are churned down the assembly lines of factory farms in Australia each year, as if they were widgets, with no regard for their suffering. New report, Science and Sense: the case for abolishing sow stalls.

In early 2012, Voiceless will release a major new report marshalling, for the first time, all the relevant science on sow stalls and their effects on the welfare of female pigs. While it may seem self-evident that confinement in these cages harms pigs, industry, government and some veterinary scientists have argued that sow stalls are on balance beneficial to pig welfare. Through an exacting review of the science, the report makes the case for the immediate abolition of these cages, which are banned or being phased out in an increasing number of jurisdictions overseas. The report was written by Malcolm Caulfield PhD, who serves as science writer to the Voiceless Scientific Expert Advisory Council (SEAC), and reviewed by the Professors and Doctors who form SEAC.

Reports

Voiceless produces annual exposés on key farming industries in order to ‘lift the veil of secrecy’ on the suffering that goes on behind the closed doors of factory farms. These in-depth publications include analysis of international and Australian scientific literature, the legal regulatory system in Australia (with comparisons to overseas jurisdictions) and build powerful arguments in support of a call for change in the current treatment of animals in factory farms.
