Politicians who speak up for animals play an important role in highlighting institutionalised cruelty. Their efforts place the suffering of animals on the public record where they can garner media attention and facilitate community debate. They also acknowledge the legitimacy of public concern about animals, paving the way for meaningful law reform. Interestingly, while Australian politicians generally vote along party lines, MPs and Senators who show compassion for animals come from a cross-spectrum of political parties. The politicians whose speeches we have published should be commended for giving a voice to animals, standing up for their values and for what they believe is morally right. If you are concerned about the treatment of animals in your jurisdiction, please consider writing to your State or Federal MP to express your concerns.
