There are 7 Organic Certification bodies in Australia who certify farmers annually to the National Australian Standards for Organic and Biodynamic Produce.
As a general rule, producers of organic or biodynamic livestock must allow their animals to graze freely during daylight hours, ensuring the animals can engage in their 'natural social behaviour and social interactions'. Accreditation from any of the seven organic certification bodies ensures that products sporting these labels adhere to the National Australian Standards for Organic and Bio-dynamic Produce.
You can also look for organic products at your local health food stalls, at organic farmers markets, or through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) system in your home town.
There is a growing number of free range and organic associations which may be able to further assist you with your enquiries. A selection of useful links follows:
Free Range Pig Farmers Association runs a Quality Assurance and Certification Program. This site also provides an extensive listing of Farmers Markets.
Free Range Egg and Poultry Australia is an accreditation body that audits free range farms for both chicken meat production and egg production.
The Free Range Egg Production Auditing Scheme (FREPAS) is a separate audit scheme run by Animal Liberation SA.
The Humane Choice label covers free range beef, pork, lamb, chicken and eggs and is administered by Humane Society International.
