"If the poultry industry truly cares about the public's right to know how chickens are treated from factory to plate, then consumers deserve nothing less than the honest truth." Brian Sherman AM, 28 July 2011, read more

"A staggering number of sentient beings are churned down the assembly lines of factory farms in Australia each year, as if they were widgets, with no regard for their suffering. Macquarie University leads the way on animal-friendly catering Print E-mail

Sydney’s Macquarie University has just released its guide to sustainable catering for use by staff and students.

This comprehensive guide centres around seven principles of sustainability, two of which have a direct impact on animal welfare. The principles include choosing locally grown food, selecting environmentally friendly production methods, minimising the use of animal products, promoting fair trade, minimising waste and promoting health and wellbeing. The guide contains a full seasonal fruit and vegetable chart, as well as a traffic light system for selecting sustainable seafood.

Animal protection and sustainability are issues of growing importance in universities around the world. ‘Cage free campuses’, that is, those campuses who have banned caged eggs, now stretch right across the US and some universities here in Australia, such as the University of Newcastle, are beginning to follow suit. For information about how to run a cage free campaign at your school or university, please visit our Cage Free Campaign pages.

Voiceless applauds Macquarie University for taking this important stand on where and how their food is sourced and produced. They are raising awareness and making a difference on so many issues – animal protection, the environment and personal health. It is not surprising that Voiceless Director Ondine Sherman graduated from Macquarie with a Masters in Environmental Education, as Macquarie is clearly among the leaders in this area. Ondine was recently profiled in Macquarie University’s alumni magazine, Macquarie Matters, about her work in animal protection, which you can read here.

The Macquarie University guide to sustainable catering referenced the Voiceless report, From Paddocks to Prisons, as well as an article by Voiceless Corporate Counsel, Katrina Sharman. Voiceless looks forward to hearing about other universities and workplaces who are including animal protection in their move towards sustainability. If you here of any please let us know.
