In a historic moment for animals in the United States, more than 63% of Californian voters approved Proposition 2 yesterday, signalling an end to three of the cruellest factory farming practices, battery cages, gestation/sow crates and veal crates, by January 2015.
According to Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States,
“California voters have taken a stand for decency and compassion and said that the systemic mistreatment of animals on factory farms cannot continue".
California joins 4 other US states in banning sow crates and 2 others who have banned veal crates. It is the first US jurisdiction to ban battery cages. The passing of Proposition 2 has added momentum to the movement to ban factory farming in the US and has also moved the nation closer into line with European Farm Animal Law Reform. Meanwhile, factory-farming practices continue unabated in Australia.
Australia does not have a Ballot Initiative process that enables the community to directly express their objection to factory farming; however there are still many ways that individuals can get active to speak out against legalised cruelty.
