An interesting debate took place between Dr Dror Ben-Ami of THINKK, the think tank for kangaroos at UTS and Prof Mike Archer former Dean of Science, UNSW on the ABC Science Show on Radio National at midday on 16 July 2011

On 13 July, the ABC's 7.30 programme broadcast a story "Kangaroo harvesting under the spotlight" about the commercial kangaroo industry.

On the evening of 6 July 2011, the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Senator Joe Ludwig, announced the lifting of the ban on Australia’s live export trade with Indonesia. The ban was announced in response to intense public pressure following the exposure by Animals Australia and ABC’s Four Corners, of horrific abuse of Australian cattle at Indonesian slaughterhouses.

Voiceless calls on the Commonwealth government to reinstate its ban on the live cattle trade to Indonesia.

We, the undersigned, share the community’s condemnation of the institutionalised abuse of cattle exported live to Indonesia for slaughter, as revealed on Four Corners on Monday 30 May, 2011.

On Monday night, ABC1's Four Corners exposed horrific abuse of Australian cattle exported live to Indonesia for slaughter. A traumatised public has reacted with outrage.

As part of a Government inquiry into Victoria's regulatory framework, the Victorian Farmers Federation has recommended the commercial harvesting of kangaroos and wallabies and that the process for obtaining kangaroo culling permits be simplified.
