It's going to be a week of contrasts starting on Monday for Sydney investor and philanthropist Brian Sherman.

Sherman, founder of animal welfare think tank Voiceless, heads to Brisbane with his team to attend a one-day conference on Monday organised by the Universiuty of Queensland's Centre for animal welfare and ethics and held at Griffith University.

Calls by kangaroo industry advocates and environmentalists to get more kangaroo meat on the plates of Australians ignore serious issues associated with the industry. Pre-eminent among these is the institutionalised animal abuse that underpins the commercial trade in kangaroo meat.

Government must take the lead: Voiceless

New Zealand has announced a complete ban on the use of sow stalls by the end of 2015.

Under New Zealand's Animal Welfare (Pigs) Code of Welfare 2010, which came into effect on Friday, the use of sow stalls will be limited to four weeks by 2012, and banned completely by the end of 2015.

Animal protection institute Voiceless gave out almost $200,000 in funding at its annual awards last night.

Among the beneficiaries was a documentary, The Bust, which will expose the horrors of Australia's factory farming industry.
