How to Write to Your Politicians

You don’t have to be a legal expert to contact a politician and let them know how you feel about animal suffering. However if you intend to write a detailed letter or make a lengthy submission on a law or policy, your first step should be to get informed by researching the appropriate Government Department’s website. Government websites usually contain links to laws, policies, codes, reports, information sheets and other material which can help educate you about the issue you plan to write about. If you are not sure which website to visit, you may wish to start by consulting the table below.

To ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of the plight of animals associated with the issue that you propose to write about, we also suggest that you follow this link to the Get Informed pages of our website, as well as this link to our webpage listing of other animal protection groups.

Who Should You Write To?

Irrespective of the issue you decide to write about, it is always a good idea to contact your local, federal or state member of parliament (MP). Your local MP may be willing to make representations to the Minister responsible for the particular animal protection issue that concerns you. If you are responding to a call for submissions made by a particular Government Department, we suggest that you direct your submission to them in the first instance.

You may also wish to write directly to the Minister responsible. Information about which Minister to write to can be found on  the relevant Government Department’s website:
