2007 Lecture Series Print E-mail

In May this year, Voiceless teamed up with the University of New South Wales’ Faculty of Law to instigate Australia’s first-ever animal law lecture series.

The first speaker in the series, was international guest, Professor Steven Wise, described by USA Today as “ America’s best-known animal lawyer”.

The lecture series involved a week-long speaking tour, which took Professor Wise to a number of leading law schools and legal professional associations in Sydney, Melbourne and Wollongong. Follow this link to view his full schedule

The highlight of the series was the Voiceless/UNSW inaugural public lecture, which was held at UNSW’s Kensington campus. It included a panel discussion by Professor David Weisbrot AM, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, Geoffrey Bloom, lecturer of animal law at UNSW, and Katrina Sharman, Voiceless's Corporate Counsel.

As part of the series, Voiceless also held a full-day Animal Law Seminar, entitled 'From Paddocks to Pleadings' which was kindly hosted by the Law Society of New South Wales. The seminar covered an array of legal issues which affect farm animals, ranging from property law and food labelling regulations to defamation and animal welfare laws.  Follow this link to find out more about the seminar.

The response to the lecture series from lawyers, the community and numerous media outlets confirmed that animal law is now a cutting edge area with enormous potential to reduce animal suffering.
