Lawyers for Animals
Lawyers for Animals is a not-for-profit organisation which seeks to provide practical, legal-oriented education on animal welfare matters to government, the animal industry and the public. Lawyers for Animals believes that the reduction and elimination of animal suffering is most likely to be achieved through law reform and education; and that lawyers have a special obligation to share their legal understanding and thus promote public engagement in animal welfare matters.

Membership of Lawyers for Animals is open to all persons (lawyers and non-lawyers) who are interested in supporting it. However, executive positions are limited to duly admitted legal practitioners. Lawyers for Animals’ volunteer program offers members the choice to become involved (if they wish) at a practical level, in the work of the organisation.

Barristers Animal Welfare Panel
The Barristers Animal Welfare Panel is a Bar Association of the Victorian Bar comprising some 90 barristers who have come together to advise and appear on a pro bono or reduced fee basis (instructed under the auspices of PILCH or direct by different law firms) for litigants in public interest cases affecting animal welfare, in prosecutions for cruelty offences, and on behalf of protesters; to challenge publicly Australia’s deficient animal protection legal regime and to formulate and prosecute proposals for law reform; and to promote the adoption by law schools of ‘animal law’ as a subject. Expressions of interest are welcome from other legal professionals, law students and others.
