The Australian Society for Kangaroos was awarded $15,000 to produce a TV commercial to inspire public empathy for this much-maligned Australian icon, and to increase public awareness about the inherent cruelty of the commercial kangaroo industry.

Margaret Warner received a $2,500 grant to produce Kangaroo Footprints, an activity book, teacher’s manual and companion website targeting primary aged students.  The project will help students (and their parents) develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for kangaroos by exploring attitudes and values and encouraging students to make informed decisions about animal protection.

Susie Rowe’s organisation Sponsoroo was the People’s Choice! runner up and received $1,000 for an online program designed to encourage interest, education and awareness about kangaroos.  Through KangaCharm, Sponsoroo will develop educational materials to support presentations in schools and tourist centres.  Through the website, visitors will also have the opportunity to sponsor an Eastern Grey or Red Kangaroo of their choice.

  • Australian Wildlife Protection Council received a $10,000 grant for their project - The Kangaroo Trail.  The Kangaroo Trail will give both Australians and international visitors a greater appreciation of and respect for kangaroo fauna through the creation of a tourist trail that will provide first-hand education on, and engagement with, kangaroos.
  • Animal Liberation NSW has received a $5,000 grant to research and write a report on the Australian commercial kangaroo industry and the environmental risks and animal welfare concerns associated with it. The report will be presented to the European Parliament’s Inter-group on Animal Welfare in 2008 and it is hoped that it will educate the EU and local animal welfare groups about the cruelty of the commercial kangaroo industry.

Grants awarded: 2004

  • Australian Wildlife Protection Council received a grant of $10,000 to  help fund the publication of this collaborative production of papers by scientists, animal welfare and wildlife protection groups, and guided by Dr. David Croft of the University of New South Wales. The 2nd edition is described by Maryland Wilson, President of the Australian Wildlife Protection Council as "a heartbreaking expose of the insidious events that have led to the present crisis facing the nation's kangaroos". This second edition of the book contains additional scientific papers and a new forward by Professor Peter Singer.
