For the first time this year, Voiceless also awarded a runner up prize of $2,500, which went to producer Lesley Robinson and reporter Tracy Bowden of ABC’s 7.30 Report, for their piece, Puppy Farms.

The two winners were chosen from more than 70 qualifying entries, a sign that the number of journalists and mainstream media outlets covering important animal protection issues is growing.

Judges for this year’s prize were:

  • former NSW Premier Bob Carr;
  • Voiceless Patron and Nobel Laureate John Coetzee;
  • Professor David Weisbrot AM, who also announced this year’s winners; and
  • Ondine and Brian Sherman
