Although the Revised Code has been endorsed by all State and Territory Governments and will likely be enacted into their respective legislation, you can still be a voice for pigs by following these steps:
-
Write to your State/Territory Primary Industries Minister, expressing your concerns about the Revised Code or the treatment of animals in factory farms in
Australia generally
. Encourage the Minister to amend your State/Territory Animal Welfare Law to prohibit sow stalls, farrowing crates and other practices that cause farm animals to suffer. You might also wish to write to your local politician or MP. With enough community pressure, your MP can play an influential part in changing laws. You can contact your local MP by organising a meeting, writing a letter, a fax or an email or making a phone call. Information on your local, state and federal politicians can be found at http://www.gov.au.
- If you choose to eat products such as pork, ham or bacon, choose certified free range or certified organic products, To find out why we recommend that you purchase these products, follow this link to our report on the labelling of animal-derived food products, From Label to Liable.
-
Let your local supermarket, deli, café or store know that you would prefer to buy humanely produced products such as pork, ham or bacon or ask them to stock more vegetarian or vegan items. Food retailers aim to please their customers.
