In 2008, Voiceless awarded the first ever ‘Student of the Year’ Award to a law student who demonstrated leadership, energy, sound legal knowledge of animal protection issues and who encouraged others to help lift the veil of secrecy on the suffering of factory farmed animals. Congratulations to Shatha Hamade from the University of Melbourne who was announced as the "Student of the Year' at the 2008 Voiceless Grants Awards Event which was held in November at The Mint in Sydney. Voiceless Ambassador Lindsay McDougall was on hand to present Shatha with her Award, which included a two-day enrolment at the Minding Animals Conference to be held in July 2009. The Event was a huge success and we were lucky enough to be joined by a number of special guests including: former NSW Premier Bob Carr, Australian Law Reform Commission President David Weisbrot, Hugo Weaving, Lindsay McDougall and Imogen Bailey.
