| Treatment of animals: litmus test for a nation |

Sydney Morning Herald Gandhi once said that the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. If that's the case, Australia's report card in the past would say: could do better. This month the country's first animal law textbook, Animal Law in Australasia, was launched by the former High Court judge Michael Kirby, part of an event organised by Voiceless, an animal advocacy group. Its corporate counsel, Katrina Sharman, says Australia is following America's path, where "creative lawyering" has taken test cases to push animal rights using existing laws.
