Sydney Morning Herald: Letters
by Brian Sherman

"The recent announcement of NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian McDonald to increase the size of battery hen cages does not smooth the ruffled feathers of the animal protection movement.

"The planned increase in space for a battery hen is equivalent to the size of your passport or the average beer coaster. A hen will still be prevented from stretching her wings, perching, dust bathing or nesting.

"What’s more, the increase is being heralded as giving NSW battery hens “a better deal”. A better deal compared to what? Australia lags shamefully behind international developments and community expectations on layer hen standards. " (extract)
