YUGUL Mangi Community Council has won national recognition for its efforts dealing with the large populations of dogs in the Arnhem Land towns of Ngukurr, Minyerri and Urapunga.

In an awards ceremony in Sydney, animal rights organisation Voiceless awarded the council a $10,000 grant for an animal protection program.

Voiceless co-founder and director Brian Sherman said the judges, including actor Hugo Weaving, thought the welfare of dogs in small NT communities made Yugul Mangi Council a worthy grant recipient.

Yugul Mangi Council chief executive Andrei Koeppen said dogs played an important role in the lives of community members but risked passing on health problems to people.

The grant money will help the council make a DVD to educate community members on the proper treatment of their dogs.
