It's not the happiest time of the year for Aussie piglets. A new report from Sydney-based animal welfare group Voiceless claims 90 per cent of Christmas hams are sourced from factory farms where pigs live in cramped indoor cages on concrete floors with barely enough room to move around.

The report, "From Paddocks to Prison", due to be released today in Sydney has the backing of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, Compassion in World Farming and the Humane Society International. Key findings include that sows may suffer prolonged depression by being denied natural light, space and the ability to forage for food in natural surroundings, tail docking of piglets is so painful it can provoke vomiting and piglets teeth are clipped without anaesthetic, which can cause up to 14 days of extreme pain.
