New voice for animals

I welcome a new organisation 'Voiceless', which will work to promote respect and compassion for animals, increase awareness of the conditions in which they live and take action to protect animals from suffering. Congratulation to founders Ondine and Brian Sherman and their dedication to helping Australians to improve animal welfare.

It is frustrating trying to get action in Parliament to support the important role that pets play in the community, and to protect domesticated farm animals and wild animals. While our Governments drag their feet, local communities - whether pet owners, consumers or voters - must push for humane standards.

Voiceless will operate as a philanthropic organisation, with national grants dedicated to animals, donating $100,000 annually. The 2004 program offers up to $100,000 in grants: two $20,000, four $10,000 and four $5,000 grants. Information: telephone 9357 070 or www.voiceless.org.au.
