Voiceless has announced its first round of grants for projects which improve the welfare of animals and encourage compassion towards them.

The Fund for animals was set up by Brian and Ondine Sherman and in November announced grants totalling $141,000 to 17 organisations.

They included $20.000 to the Humane Society International for a campaign to research the development of a "humane choice" consumer label. Other grants were for dog management program in the Northern Territory, an anti-live export lobbying campaign and one to end battery farming in the ACT

"If one teaches one's children to respect and show compassion for all animals, there is a chance that they will make choices in their lifetime that will cause fewer animals to suffer," Voiceless director, Brian Sherman said. Over 110 applications from educational institutions, councils and animal organisations around Australia were received.

Suzy Rubinstein, April Gadd and Tessa Rubinstein were awarded $5,000 for their plans to produce an entertaining, eye-catching and interactive online lifestyle magazine which aims to "bring a level of equality to both humans and animals".
