Now in its third year, the Voiceless Animal Law Lecture Series brings to Australia top American animal lawyer Bruce Wagman for a lecture tour that is fast becoming a must see for all Australians interested in the cutting edge area of animal advocacy.
Acclaimed Northern Californian ‘Super Lawyer’ Bruce Wagman, will deliver the keynote address of the series at The University of Sydney’s prestigious new law school during an evening of sparkling law talk that will also see Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG launch Australia’s first animal law text book, Animal Law in Australasia. This year, Sydney Law School will join the growing number of Australian universities championing animal law when it offers the course for the first time. What: Voiceless Animal Law Lecture Series keynote lecture by US animal advocate Bruce Wagman; Panel discussion led by Prof. David Weisbrot, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission and launch of the ground-breaking text book, Animal Law in Australasia by the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG. When: 6pm – 8pm, Tuesday 5th May. Where: Sydney Law School, The Auditorium Room 101, Eastern Avenue, The University of Sydney, Camperdown campus. Why: Free public lecture to discover why lessons learned about animal suffering in US courtrooms may apply to Australia and why animal protection law is fast becoming everyone's business. During a ten day speaking tour, Bruce Wagman will visit leading universities, law schools, law firms and professional associations through the eastern states. Mr Wagman, who is a partner in the San Francisco commercial law firm of Schiff Hardin, will share his insights and experiences gleaned from protecting the interests of domestic and farm animals in US State and Federal courts and challenging the big corporations that use and exploit cows, pigs and chickens for profit. “All humans should care about animal protection law because we have a moral and ethical obligation to those who are innocent and vulnerable, as they are our wards in this world we live in. The pain and suffering we participate in by virtue of the consumption of animal products can be reduced by the application and advancement of animal protection laws,” Mr Wagman said. Animal Law in Australasia, is edited by Peter Sankoff of The University of Auckland and Steven White of Griffith University and published by The Federation Press. While in Sydney, Mr Wagman will also conduct a breakfast seminar for legal professionals, co-hosted by Voiceless and NSW Young Lawyers Animal Law Committee, at The Law Society of NSW. The 2009 Voiceless Animal Law Lecture series will take place between 5th May and 14th May 2009 and tour universities, law schools, law firms and professional associations in New South Wales, Queensland, the ACT, South Australia and Victoria.
