Voiceless calls on government to follow New Zealand's ban on sow stall

Brian Sherman AM, Managing Director of Voiceless, calls on Federal Minister for Agriculture, Senator Joe Ludwig, to immediately revise the Pig Code and follow the lead of New Zealand who today announced a complete ban on the use of sow stalls by the end of 2015.

Voiceless commends the decision to phase out the use of sow stalls for pregnant pigs by 2017, made by delegates yesterday at the Australian Pork Limited annual general meeting. Voiceless Director Brian Sherman AM, speaking today from overseas, has called on the government to follow suit.

Tasmanian government puts compassion ahead of politics
In a historic move for animals in Australia, the Tasmanian Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Bryan Green, today announced his government’s plan to place restrictions on the time pregnant sows are allowed to be kept in stalls from 2014, with a full ban coming into effect in 2017. This puts Tasmania ahead of the rest of the country, where pregnant pigs will lawfully be permitted to be confined for the duration of their 16 week pregnancy until at least 2017.
