Announcing the 2010 Voiceless Animal Law Lecture Series
In San Francisco 30 years ago, a handful of attorneys set in train a revolution that has touched the lives of billions of animals worldwide. This August, one of those pioneers of the animal law movement, leading US animal lawyer Joyce Tischler, will speak at events across the country as part of Voiceless’s fourth annual Animal Law Lecture Series.
Brian Sherman AM, Co-founder and Director of Voiceless, the animal protection institute, said “People often ask why animals need lawyers. With the level of animal cruelty sanctioned by the law in Australia, the real question should be ‘why don’t animals have lawyers already?’” In her presentation entitled ‘Past Lives and Future Hopes – A vision to end animal suffering’, Ms Tischler will share her experience of the birth of the animal law movement, and explain how legal education and strategic litigation have placed animal law firmly on the agenda in America’s key institutions and courtrooms. The recent emergence of animal law in Australian universities and professional associations suggest that this country is preparing to following suit. Joyce Tischler, Co-founder and General Counsel for the US Animal Legal Defense Fund, is widely known as ‘the mother of the animal law movement’. In this series of FREE lectures for lawyers and the general public, Ms Tischler will share the passion and vision that created a movement.
